Questions
Quick answers about getting started, fees, lessons and keeping your child's information safe.
Getting started
What's included?
One subscription covers your child's year, from Year 3 to Year 8: maths and English lessons, quizzes and practice at five levels, reading lessons, and writing tasks with feedback. Up to four children can share one family account.
Does it follow the New Zealand Curriculum?
Yes. Each lesson sits in the NZ year that teaches it, checked against the English and Mathematics and Statistics learning areas schools have used from Term 1, 2026. A lesson we haven't checked for New Zealand yet shows as Coming soon and is never put in the plan.
Is Study Compass connected to NZCER or the Ministry of Education?
No. Study Compass is independent. It isn't affiliated with or endorsed by NZCER, the Ministry of Education, or any school. Every lesson and question is written by Study Compass.
How much help will my child need?
Not much. Lessons read aloud and explain as they go, so most children work on their own. Check the parent view once or twice a week.
What happens after the free month?
We email you before your month ends. Nothing is charged unless you choose to subscribe, and you can cancel any time from the Subscription tab.
How much time does it take?
You decide. Set the study days and minutes for each child, and the plan fills that time, then stops. Many families do four sessions of 20 to 30 minutes a week.
Can it replace a tutor?
It works on its own or alongside a tutor. Either way, the parent view shows what's been covered and where help is needed.
Fees and your subscription
How much does it cost?
After your free month it's NZ$49 a month for one child, or NZ$499 a year. Each extra child costs less. The pricing page shows your family total. Prices are in New Zealand dollars.
Do I need a card for the trial?
No. The trial is one month, free, with no card. You only add payment details if you decide to subscribe.
How do I cancel?
Open the grown-ups area, go to Subscription and choose Cancel subscription. You keep access until the end of the period you've paid for.
Can I get a refund?
If you pay yearly and change your mind within 14 days, email us for a full refund. If something on our side has gone wrong, tell us and we'll make it right. Your rights under New Zealand consumer law always apply.
Lessons and progress
Who chooses what my child learns?
A short starting check finds where to begin. After that, fixed rules pick the next step from your child's answers, and each activity shows why it's there. AI helps with writing feedback, but it doesn't choose the plan.
How is writing marked?
Your child writes stories and persuasive pieces, and gets feedback on ideas, structure, vocabulary, sentences, punctuation and spelling, with one clear thing to work on next. Scores are practice scores, not school results.
My child is in Year 7 or 8 at intermediate. Is that covered?
Yes. Years 7 and 8 have their own maths and English lessons, whether your child is at an intermediate or a full primary.
We're moving between Australia and New Zealand. Do we lose progress?
No. Change the country in Family settings and everything your child has done stays. The plan moves lessons to the years they're taught in your new country.
Accounts and privacy
Does my child need an email address?
No. You create a username and password for each child. Children never need their own email.
Are there ads or chat?
No ads, no public profiles, no chat between children and no leaderboards.
Where is our information stored?
Accounts and schoolwork are kept on servers in Sydney, Australia. Writing sent for feedback is processed by our AI service in the United States, without your child's name. Our privacy policy lists everything we keep.
