If your child's school seems to be teaching maths and English differently this year, that's because it is. From Term 1, 2026, state and state-integrated schools must teach the updated English and Mathematics and Statistics learning areas for Years 0 to 10.[1]
The final content went up on the Ministry's teaching site, Tāhūrangi, on 20 October 2025, so teachers had a term to get ready.[1] Kaupapa Māori schools and kura have their own arrangements.[1]
What's different
The biggest change for parents is how specific it is. The old curriculum described broad levels that each stretched over about two years. The new content spells out what children learn in each year, so it's much easier to see whether your child is on track.
- It's set out year by year. A Year 5 teacher and a Year 5 parent can look at the same list.
- More is taught explicitly. Spelling, grammar, number facts and written methods are taught directly, not left to pick up along the way.
- Other subjects follow. The rest of the curriculum is being updated over the next few years on a slower timeline.[2]
An hour a day of each
Since Term 1, 2024, schools with Years 0 to 8 have had to spend an average of at least an hour a day each on reading, writing and maths.[3] The time can be split into smaller blocks, and it can happen inside other subjects, so it won't always look like a "maths lesson" on the timetable.[3]
What this means at home
You don't need to teach the curriculum. A few small habits help more:
- Ask what they learned, not how it went. "Show me how you did that" tells you more than "fine".
- Keep number facts warm. Five minutes of times tables or quick adding in the car adds up over a term.
- Read every day, and talk about the book. Asking why a character did something builds the same skills reading lessons do.
- Look at the year's content on Tāhūrangi if you want detail. It's public.[1]
How Study Compass uses it
Each Study Compass lesson sits in the New Zealand year that teaches it, checked against the 2026 English and Mathematics and Statistics content. If we haven't checked a lesson for New Zealand yet, it stays marked Coming soon and never turns up in your child's plan.
Lessons placed in the right NZ year
Every lesson sits in the year New Zealand schools teach it. A short starting check shows where your child is.
