Terms of use

The agreement between your family and Study Compass: the free month, subscriptions, cancelling, refunds and your consumer rights.

Updated 25 October 2026.

The short version. Try it free for one month, with no card. If you subscribe, you can cancel any time and keep access until your paid period ends. Writing scores are practice scores, not school results. Your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act and the Fair Trading Act always apply.

1. Who can use Study Compass

These terms are the agreement between your family and Study Compass, run by an Australian sole trader (ABN 89 274 700 789). A parent or caregiver aged 18 or over opens the account and adds their children. You're responsible for your account and for how your children use it, so please give us accurate details when you sign up. Children sign in with a username their parent sets up, and never need their own email address.

2. Free trial and subscriptions

Every New Zealand family gets one month free, with no card needed. Nothing is charged when the trial ends unless you choose to subscribe, and we'll email you before your month is up.

After that, Study Compass is a family subscription, paid monthly or yearly, in New Zealand dollars. Current prices are on the pricing page. Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. If prices change, we'll email you at least 30 days before your next payment, and you can cancel before the new price applies.

3. Cancelling and refunds

Cancel any time from the Subscription tab in the grown-ups area. You keep access until the end of the period you've paid for, and you won't be charged again.

If you pay yearly and change your mind within 14 days, email hello@studycompass.com.au for a full refund. If we've charged you by mistake, we'll refund it.

4. Your consumer rights

The Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 says our service must be provided with reasonable care and skill, be fit for the purpose we've agreed, and be delivered in a reasonable time. If something on our side stops Study Compass working properly, tell us and we'll fix it. If the problem is serious, or we can't fix it in a reasonable time, you can cancel and get a refund for the time you couldn't use.

Nothing in these terms takes away your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act or the Fair Trading Act 1986.

5. Writing feedback and AI

Writing is scored by our writing marker, which uses AI and published marking guidelines to give feedback and a practice score in seconds. Maths, reading and English questions are marked automatically against set answers.

Like any marker, it can get things wrong now and then. Its scores are practice scores to help your child improve. They aren't school results, and they don't replace a teacher's judgement.

6. Your child's work

Your child's writing and answers belong to your family. You let us store and use them only to run Study Compass for you: to mark work, plan lessons and show progress. We don't use your child's work to train AI, and we never publish it.

7. Using it fairly

Each subscription is for one family. Please don't share your login with other families, copy or resell our lessons and questions, or try to break or overload the site. If an account is misused, we may suspend it after contacting you.

8. Our content

Lessons, questions, audio and designs on Study Compass belong to us. You can use them for your own family's learning. Study Compass is independent. It isn't affiliated with or endorsed by NZCER, the Ministry of Education or any school.

Our privacy policy explains what we collect and how we look after it.

9. Changes, liability and the law that applies

We keep improving Study Compass, so features can change. If we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll email you before the change takes effect, and you can cancel if you don't agree.

Study Compass helps children practise, but we can't promise particular school results. As far as the law allows, we're not responsible for indirect losses, and our total liability is limited to what you've paid us in the last 12 months. None of this limits your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act.

These terms are governed by New Zealand law.
